Scrap Metal Transport: From the Yard to the Discharge Port

Shipping scrap metal is not like moving ordinary cargo: weighing, radiation screening, grading and the document chain all have to be set up correctly from the outset. The haulage is ours — we carry it on our own routes.

Because of its volume and density, scrap is one of those commodities where transport is the single most decisive line in the total cost. The right vessel type, the right stowage and the right port materially change the cost per tonne. Novi Engineering schedules scrap shipments on its regular Black Sea sailings and coordinates the entire operation — from loading at the yard to discharge at the arrival port — from one centre. That removes the hunt for a vessel, the separate agency negotiation and the scattered paperwork.

The Forms We Ship In

Bulk Scrap

Loaded straight into the hold; for large tonnages this is the most economical shipping form.

Baled and Packed Scrap

High stowage-efficiency loading plans for pressed bales, making the fullest use of hold volume.

Container Shipments

Secure containerised transport for small and mid-size lots and for higher-value non-ferrous metals.

Big-Bag and Crated Cargo

Big-bags for turnings, offcuts and granulated scrap; crates and pallets for sensitive lots.

What We Offer in Transport

  • Our Own Sailing Routes

Scheduled departures let you programme your shipment weeks in advance.

  • End-to-End Operation

Yard, port, loading, sea transport and discharge are coordinated from one centre.

  • Complete Documentation

Weighing, analysis, radiation screening and export papers prepared correctly from the start.

Send us the grade, tonnage and loading point of your scrap shipment and we'll come back the same day with a suitable sailing and a firm price per tonne.

Scrap Transport

Why Scrap Transport Is a Discipline of Its Own

Scrap metal is not ordinary cargo. Its density, irregular geometry and sharp edges demand a specific approach to both loading and stowage. A parcel stowed incorrectly in the hold can shift at sea and upset the vessel's stability, while a miscalculated stowage factor leaves the hold full by volume but empty by tonnage — meaning the freight you paid for goes to waste.

On top of that sits a regulatory layer: scrap shipments are subject to inspection for radiation, grading and waste legislation. Skipping the pre-loading screening or presenting incomplete documents means cargo sitting at the port for days. At Novi Engineering we manage both layers — operational stowage and regulatory compliance — from a single point.

  • Correct stowage factor calculated for the cargo type
  • Stowage plans that account for hold stability and shifting risk
  • Pre-loading radiation screening and certification
  • Compliance checks against waste and export legislation

What Drives the Cost per Tonne

In scrap transport the cost per tonne is the product of four variables: shipping form, tonnage, distance and port efficiency. Bulk shipment uses the whole hold and brings the unit cost to its lowest level — but only once a minimum tonnage is met. Containerised shipping carries a higher unit cost, yet it remains the most practical way to move small lots and higher-value non-ferrous metals safely.

Port efficiency is the line most often overlooked. Extra days spent at a port with slow loading rates come back as demurrage on the invoice. That is why our voyage planning weighs not just the distance but the equipment available at the loading and discharge ports and the expected loading rate. Our regular Black Sea sailings let us make that calculation in advance.

  • Lowest unit cost in bulk, subject to a minimum tonnage
  • Higher unit cost in containers, in exchange for flexibility
  • The effect of port equipment and loading rate on demurrage
  • Freight that can be calculated ahead thanks to regular sailings

From Yard to Port: The Inland Leg

Before the sea leg can begin, the scrap has to reach the port stockpile. This stage is often the most fragmented part of the shipment: parcels arriving from different yards, different vehicle types, and loads that each need weighing separately. Without single-point coordination, the same parcel can end up weighed twice or stockpiled in the wrong place at the port.

We take this stage on as well. From your facility or collection yard to the port stockpile, we organise vehicle planning, weighbridge records and yard stockpiling. Every parcel's weighing record is logged and reconciled against the total tonnage loaded onto the vessel, making any difference between yard and ship measurable.

  • Vehicle planning from facility or collection yard to the port stockpile
  • Weighbridge records and weighing certificates for every parcel
  • Stockpiling at the port segregated by grade
  • Yard tonnage reconciled against vessel tonnage

The Documentation and Compliance Chain

In scrap shipments the paperwork matters as much as the transport itself. Weighing certificates, packing lists, radiation screening reports, the bill of lading and the export declaration all have to agree with one another. A tonnage on one document that fails to match another triggers questions at customs and on the buyer's side, and can delay payment.

For that reason we do not leave documentation until after loading. The record chain starts the moment the parcel enters the yard, and each document produced along the way is reconciled against the one before it. By the time the shipment is complete, you hold a full file in which every document confirms the others.

  • Weighing certificates and packing lists cross-checked
  • Radiation screening report prepared before loading
  • Consistent tonnage across bill of lading and export declaration
  • A complete, internally consistent file at the end of the shipment

Integrated With Our Black Sea Routes

What sets Novi Engineering apart in scrap transport is that we carry the cargo on our own sailing routes rather than buying the transport in. Our routes out of Karasu, Ünye, Bartın and Marmara run regularly to Rostov, Temryuk, Sochi and Kavkaz. That regularity means you can programme your shipment weeks ahead: no hunting for a vessel, no separate negotiation with an agent, no exposure to spot-market freight swings.

Combined with our scrap sales service, this turns into a single delivered-price package. If you buy the material from us, we can quote a delivered price per tonne; if you are shipping your own material, we take on the transport leg alone. Either way, loading, voyage and discharge are coordinated from one centre.

  • Regular routes out of Karasu, Ünye, Bartın and Marmara
  • Scheduled sailings to Rostov, Temryuk, Sochi and Kavkaz
  • Predictable cost, insulated from spot freight swings
  • The option to combine sale and transport into one package

How the Transport Process Works

  1. 1

    Cargo Assessment and Planning

We confirm the scrap grade, tonnage, loading point and destination port, then select the right sailing and vessel type.

  2. 2

    Yard and Port Operations

We organise haulage from the yard to the port area, weighing and stockpiling, and run the pre-loading preparation.

  3. 3

    Screening, Analysis and Documents

Radiation screening, weighbridge records, packing lists and export documentation are prepared in full.

  4. 4

    Loading and Sea Transport

We supervise loading against the stowage plan and report on your cargo's status regularly throughout the voyage.

  5. 5

    Arrival and Delivery

We coordinate discharge at the arrival port and, where required, complete inland haulage to the buyer's facility.

Scrap Transport FAQs

Is there a minimum tonnage?

Bulk shipments require a minimum tonnage tied to vessel capacity; for smaller lots we offer container and part-load options. Tell us your tonnage and we'll work out the best shipping form together.

Do you handle radiation screening and certification?

Yes. Pre-loading radiation screening, weighbridge records and the associated conformity documents are a standard part of our operation.

Which ports do you work from?

We run regular sailings from Black Sea and Marmara ports: routes out of Karasu, Ünye, Bartın and Marmara serve Rostov, Temryuk, Sochi and Kavkaz.

Do you also handle haulage before loading?

Yes. We organise inland haulage from your yard or facility to the port stockpile, so a single contract covers the whole chain.

Is insurance available?

On request we arrange cargo insurance covering your consignment for the full journey.
